Python for defenders: understanding log files

A beginner-friendly introduction to using Python on your own log files to count events and spot unusual patterns without probing other systems.

Safety rule: security learning here is for systems you own or are explicitly authorized to test. The goal is prevention, secure development and responsible reporting.

What a log is

A log is a timeline created by software: timestamps, events, status codes and other operational details.

Start with your own data

Practice only with logs you own or are explicitly authorized to analyze. A small exported text or CSV file is enough.

Useful beginner tasks

Count repeated error types, summarize status codes, group events by hour, and flag sudden changes for human review.

Keep context

A repeated error is not automatically an attack. Compare it with deployments, outages and normal traffic before drawing conclusions.

Next step

Learn Python file handling, dictionaries, CSV parsing and basic charts, then apply them to a safe local dataset.
