Authorized security testing: permission before tools
A simple guide to scope, written permission, safe environments, evidence handling and responsible reporting for defensive security work.
Safety rule: security learning here is for systems you own or are explicitly authorized to test. The goal is prevention, secure development and responsible reporting.
Permission is the first control
Only test systems you own or where the owner has clearly authorized the exact activity.
Define scope
List domains, apps, accounts, time windows and methods that are allowed. Anything not listed stays out of scope.
Prefer safe test environments
Use labs, CTFs, intentionally vulnerable practice apps or staging systems for learning.
Minimize impact
Avoid actions that could disrupt services, alter data or expose other people’s information.
Report responsibly
Record what was observed, why it matters, how to reproduce it safely, and how to fix it. Share evidence only with authorized people.
